Getting Hired

Tips from the inside

Excellent grades and likeability seem to be the formula for getting hired at Alston & Bird. Like at most firms, it definitely helps to be in the “top-10 or 20% from top schools.”  However, “the firm is looking for bright people that are fun to work with” also. “Brilliant jerks will not really be tolerated,” warns a DC contact.  And don’t think that the firm won’t thoroughly screen for personality issues. One first year reports, “For my call-back interview, I had dinner the night before with a partner and an associate, met with two associates and two partners the next day, and then went to lunch with two associates. All together, I was interviewed by 10 attorneys.” A Charlotte associate sums it up, adding, “You have to demonstrate that you can do excellent legal work and be a likeable person at the same time.”

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
