Associate Life
Vault’s Verdict: Substantial work, early responsibility, and good associate-partner relations all make for some satisfied associates at Williams & Connolly.

Satisfaction
• “I find the work incredibly satisfying and fulfilling. There is too much work to be done to waste time on busy work. Teams are staffed leanly, so real responsibility is pushed down. Young associates get substantive and exciting experience from the get go.” –junior associate
• “I would never work for another firm.” –midlevel associate
• “There's no other law firm in the world I'd want to work at. If you want to be a litigator and not work in government, this is the place.” –midlevel associate

Getting Hired

Tips from the inside

Before applying at Williams & Connolly, make sure you brush up on “Survivor.” A midlevel associate states “The firm is looking to hire someone who brings the full package: academic achievement at a top notch law school, good grades (top 10% of class), law review, interesting work experiences, articulate, clean cut, mature, etc. Grades are a firm cut off, but good grades can only get you in the door. You have to have something extra. Are you someone with whom I will want to travel to the middle of nowhere and spend several weeks away at trial?” Just hope you don’t get kicked off the island. They are looking for devoted and passionate candidates. “The firm also looks for various ‘x-factors’ like wanting to be in DC for a while, wanting to be a litigator, and wanting to work at the firm with an eye toward the long haul, and not just biding one's time until student loans are paid off,” adds a litigation associate.

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
